No Whitby visit is complete without exploring Whitby Abbey. Standing proudly on the East Cliff, these archaic ruins have overlooked the coast for centuries upon centuries and have famously inspired Bram Stoker’s gothic literature masterpiece Dracula. The panoramic views of the whole harbour and coastline alone make the whole retreat worthwhile.
To get to Whitby Abbey, visitors have to climb up the famous 199 Steps, a treat in itself. The stone staircase has become one of Whitby’s most photographed landmarks. Your climb is rewarded with some of the finest viewpoints in England, let alone North Yorkshire.

Once finished exploring all the landmarks Whitby has to offer, tourists can walk along award-winning beach stretches beneath dramatic cliffs, or the seaside pier routinely illuminated by gorgeous sunsets and sunrises. The beaches are open to all, with all sorts of things to do, such as swimming in the salty sea, exploring rock pools during low tides, or just enjoying a book in the mouth of the sunset.
The harbour offers memorable walks all day long. During the peak of a sunrise as you bask in the cool hues of blues, yellows and pinks, or during the daytime where maritime activity is at its peak as you can idly stand by gazing at the variety of boats entering and leaving the harbour. For those seeking more active adventures over promenades, the 109 mile stretch of trail known as the Cleveland Way National Trail might be much more fitting. Passing through the whole of the town, this trail provides spectacular coastal walks towards Sandsend in one direction, and Robin Hood’s Bay in the other. These routes alone showcase some of Yorkshire’s most gorgeous cliff-top scenery.

The Whitby Goth Weekend is the seminal goth festival in the UK that attracts thousands of visitors from across the UK and beyond each year. The seed of the festival being initially planted due to Whitby’s involvement in the book Dracula, Whitby became a hub for goths and alternative people annually. Taking place every October, the festival celebrates goth culture, music, and fashion.
